Norwegian artist Lars Ramberg created the word “Zweifel” in illuminated three-story letters on the roof of the East German parliament building ("Palast der Republik”) in Berlin in 2005. The building was no longer needed after the end of East Germany and re-unification of Germany in 1990.
The Zweifel sign on the “Palast der Republik” illuminated the city and as an enlightening symbol of afterthought, reflection and doubt.
For me, doubt (Zweifel) is the most important feature to find things out; as researcher, educator and clinician.
Only if we question what everybody believe is the “truth” (for example the best treatment for a disease), we can find better ways to diagnose and treat patients.
The process of research therefore always starts with doubt.
Open debate, disagreement and discussion is necessary to find new ways to do things in medicine.
This process is often difficult, sometimes painful and emotional, and always need team efforts and time.
Everything needs to be scrutinized and explored. In society and politics, and in medicine.
Doubt is the leading star.
